Simultaneity

Obviously, upon seeing the stereoscopic Mars images, I wasn't the first one to think of the jiggly effect: here's some more Martian jiggliness. Eh, I still like mine better because I have a slight fade transition between the frames.

I've alredy linked it through del.icio.us, but I want to point out the Appleseed site and trailers over here. Some nice computer generated, motion captured, cel-shaded japanimation there! (though the female protagonist jumping off a building thing is tired, man.)

Also, CBC's 1993 story: A Network Called "Internet". It's been making the rounds, but it's just too amusing to pass up. Peter Mansbridge with hair typing it up on an old-school modem-connected PC with early net geeks who think the "Internet" has more soul than most people they know. Good stuff. I wonder what those geeks think of the net now.

Wow, it just struck me how horribly misapropo the term "computer generated" is to describe CG filmmaking. It's like saying that playing an audio CD is "computer generated sound". I'm not giving you shit for your diction, just realizing how misleading the term in general was - I guess I hadn't heard it used in a while.

I think he's giving you shit, Mike. ;)

No, I'm not being mean, I swear! It's just a very widespread term, is all! And it came about in the early days of 3D animation I guess, so it sorta stuck.

I like CAD much better: Computer-*assisted* design. The computer is helping you make something! Isn't that nice?

I'M NOT INSANE I PROMISE

Well, it IS computer generated. Humans plan it and design it, and the computer RENDERS it -- aka. generates it. Some random garage band's CD wouldn't be "computer generated sound" -- but something like Autechre or whatever, would be. Computer generated, but human guided.

I don't know, maybe it's just cause it sounds better than "computer-assissted rendered but human made animation".

And you, Walter, get with the content on your site. It's more bare than a Greek nude beach.

Hey, I would! But all the other punks are slowing me up.

Almost forgot: that Appleseed trailer does look incredible, though I agree about the whole female protagonist jumping off building thing.

A quick dictionary.com-ing of "generate" reveals multiple definitions (general and programming-specific) that could support either interpretation of the term: "generate" as in, the computer causes it to come into being; and "generate" in a more technical "rendering a visual image" sense.

I still don't like the term much because it reinforces a still-extremely-prevalent public misconception that a computer actually *creates* animation, when really it's just another tool in the hands of artists and storytellers. In that larger context the term seems inappropriate.

Lookin' forward to seeing content on your new site Walter!
